‘A FACE FOR HUMAN RIGHTS IN IRAN’

THE COMMITTEE FOR THE RIGHTS OF STUDENTS AND SUFI’S IN IRAN

organizes as part of a continuous series of actions

‘A FACE FOR HUMAN RIGHTS IN IRAN’

KOUTER (in front of ING Bank), GHENT, BELGIUM 18 September 2010 -From 13:00 till 16:00 hrs

The prisoner's worst nightmare is the thought of being forgotten.

Please join us in claiming respect for human rights in Iran. During the solidarity action of Saturday, September 18, you can show the people of Iran that you have not forgotten them. You can support the Iranian people by having a picture taken of your face. Every face is a symbol of freedom, equality and brotherhood with those who are risking their lives for these values.

We urge the Iranian authorities to:

· Ensure that families and lawyers of those held and imprisoned are notified immediately of their arrest and whereabouts, and allow them immediate and regular access. Detainees and prisoners should be granted adequate medical care;

· Ensure that no one detained is tortured or otherwise ill-treated;

· Release all prisoners of conscience. These include human rights defenders, journalists, students, and political activists;

· Release all other detainees held for political reasons unless they are to be tried promptly on recognizably criminal charges and without recourse to the death penalty, in proceedings which fully meet international fair trial guarantees. Those imprisoned after unfair trails should have their cases reviewed as a matter of urgency;

· Review, as a matter of urgency, vaguely worded laws that do not amount to recognizably criminal offences and which restrict the legitimate exercise of the rights to freedom of expression, association and assembly;

· Facilitate, as a matter of urgency, visits to Iran by relevant UN human rights mechanisms, particularly the UN Special Rapporteurs on torture, on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions and on freedom of opinion and expression, to allow independent international scrutiny of the human rights situation so that their assessments and recommendations contribute to ensuring that those responsible for ordering or committing violations are held to account.

Stand up for the unjustly imprisoned, stand up against executions by stoning and be their voice!

Next actions:
